What this site does not do

  • No account: nothing to create, nothing to remember.
  • No cookies, so there is no banner to decline.
  • No audience measurement: no Google Analytics, and nothing like it.
  • A single destination outside this site, and only if you use a printing key. The typefaces are served from this site. No page calls a third-party server, except the workshop, when you activate a printing key or print with it: it then asks Gumroad whether the key is valid (see “Printing in the workshop” below). Playing, composing or printing the free puzzle sends nothing. Our security policy forbids the browser any other destination.
  • Almost nothing is stored on your device, and here is the complete list. Your progress in a puzzle stays in the page’s memory and disappears when you close it. Written to your device are: the technical files every browser keeps in its cache (the typefaces, the style sheet); — if you change it — your reading setting (text size, dark background, high contrast); in the workshop, the number of free puzzles already printed on this browser; and — if you enter one — your printing key, which is linked to your purchase at Gumroad. Neither your setting nor the free-puzzle counter ever reaches us; your key, on the other hand, is known to us — we sell it — and Gumroad tells us how many prints each key has used. You erase all of this by clearing your browser’s site data (an erased key can be entered again: the remaining prints are not lost, they are counted at Gumroad).

Your data

To play, we ask nothing of you and collect nothing ourselves. But a site is served by a machine, and that machine keeps a log: we cannot claim that no data about you exists, and we would rather tell you exactly which data.

What is processed. For every page it serves, our host records technical connection data: IP address, date and time, address requested, browser type. This is how any server ordinarily works.

Why. To serve the pages, and to keep the site secure and available. Nothing else. We do not cross-reference these logs with anything, we build no profile from them, and we do not look at them.

Who receives it. Our host, Netlify, Inc., 101 2nd Street, San Francisco, CA 94105, United States, which acts as a processor on our behalf. No one else.

Where the data goes. To the United States. The Federal Council has recognized an adequate level of protection for organizations certified under the Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Annex 1 to the Data Protection Ordinance, in force since September 15, 2024); Netlify declares this certification in its privacy policy and, failing that, applies the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses (Implementing Decision 2021/914).

For how long. The retention periods are those of our host, set out in its privacy policy. We do not publish any period we have not checked ourselves.

If you buy prints. The sale is made by Gumroad, in its own name: it resells our printing license (its terms describe it as the “merchant of record”). Gumroad collects what a payment requires — including your email address — under its own privacy policy; it is based in the United States and its data may be transferred there. As the seller, it passes on to us the details of your purchase, including your email address: we use it only to answer your questions about that purchase, and we keep it nowhere other than in our Gumroad account.

When you activate your key, and then at each paid print, the workshop sends Gumroad our product identifier, your key, and whether or not to count a print. Like any request on the internet, it also passes on your IP address and your browser type. Gumroad replies whether the key is valid and how many prints it has used. Its reply also contains details of your purchase, including your email address: the workshop does not display them, does not keep them and sends them nowhere.

Your rights. You can ask us for access to your data, or for its correction or deletion, at the address above. You can also contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in Bern.

The puzzles

The puzzles offered here are made for this site: they are not taken from any of our books, and will not go into one. They are free for everyone: playing them requires no account and no purchase.

They are made available for personal use. Reproducing, distributing or commercially exploiting them, in whole or in part, is not permitted without our written consent.

The content of this site — texts, puzzles, layout — is protected by copyright from the moment it is created, with no formality required.

Printing in the workshop

In the workshop, composing, drawing and checking a puzzle are free, with no account and no limit. One puzzle prints for free on each browser, up to 15 × 15, on A4 or Letter. Beyond that, and for large formats, printing requires a printing key: 20 prints for €9.90 (any taxes shown by Gumroad at checkout), in a single payment, no subscription, sold by Gumroad under its terms of sale and refund.

How the key is counted. Each PDF downloaded with the key uses one print, on Gumroad’s counter; the last PDF can be saved again without being counted again, and a saved PDF can then be printed as many times as you like, within the limits of the license. A key entered on several of your devices shares the same balance. A check that cannot be made — no connection, Gumroad down — prints nothing. If a print seems to have been counted without the file reaching you, write to us.

Do not lend your key. The license does not allow it, and the key gives access, at Gumroad, to the details of your purchase.

What the license allows. Printing your puzzles for your personal use, and for professional use without resale: in a classroom, in a therapy session, in an activity group.

What it does not allow. Selling the puzzles or the PDFs, publishing them — book, print on demand, website, magazine —, or redistributing the PDFs or the key.

The puzzles you make from your own pictures are yours: we receive nothing of them, neither the picture nor the puzzle.

Fonts

The text of this site is set in Luciole (version 1.001), a typeface designed for low vision by Laurent Bourcellier and Jonathan Perez, with the CTRDV and the DIPHE laboratory of Université Lumière Lyon 2 — Luciole © Laurent Bourcellier & Jonathan Perez, 2019, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International. The files served here are subsets of the original typeface, with unchanged outlines; the full notice is stored alongside them, in /polices/.

It is the same typeface as our printed books: what you read on screen has exactly the shapes of what you would read on paper. It is served from this site: displaying it calls no third-party server.

If you are reading us from the European Union

This site can be accessed from the European Union, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to it under its Article 3(2). We therefore add the following to the above:

  • Why we process this data. The host’s connection logs are used to serve the pages, to protect them against attacks and to diagnose outages. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a website and protecting it (Art. 6(1)(f)).
  • For how long. We do not keep them ourselves: we have no direct access to these logs. Their retention period is that of our host, Netlify, described in its own policy. We do not publish any period we have not checked ourselves.
  • Your rights. Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. Write to us: contact@espritvif.ch. We answer every request, even though, most of the time, we have nothing to send you — which is precisely the point of this site.
  • Complaints. With the data protection authority of your country of residence (in France, the CNIL), or, in Switzerland, with the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
  • Checking your printing key. It is used to perform the license you bought. Legal basis: performance of the contract (Art. 6(1)(b)). The data of the purchase itself is processed by Gumroad, as the seller, under its own policy.
  • Automated decision-making, profiling: none.

Applicable law

This site is published from Switzerland and is governed by Swiss law. Éditions Florimond is domiciled in the canton of Vaud.

The site itself takes no payment and keeps no accounts. Prints from the workshop are sold by Gumroad, under its own terms; the printing license described above is ours. The books are ordered from the online bookseller that distributes them, under its own terms.

To reach us, there is one address — the one above — and we reply.
